Case 11-1984

Abstract
Presentation of CaseA 41-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a mediastinal mass and the superior-venacava syndrome. He was well until 10 years earlier, when x-ray films of the chest showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and a coarse reticulonodular pattern in both lungs, more marked in the upper lobes (Fig. 1). Microscopical examination of a scalene-lymph-node-biopsy specimen, performed elsewhere, was reported to reveal sarcoidosis. No treatment was administered. Another x-ray film of the chest, obtained two years later, disclosed widening of the mediastinum, with right paratracheal and left mediastinal lymphadenopathy; the pulmonary reticulonodular pattern was unchanged.
