A Method for the Production of Uniform-sized Drops using Electrostatic Dispersion

Abstract
The pulsed microjet can produce uniform sized drops in large numbers. However, inflight collisions of drops occur so that the drop size spectrum is likely to increase with distance from the jet. Such collisions can be prevented if an electric charge is induced on to the drops at source so that they tend to repel each other. A device based on these principles is described which provides close control of drop size and allows the use of a wide range of flow rates, formulations, drop velocities and trajectories. A further advantage is that because the charged drops remain separate an even spacing on the target surface is produced.
