Photochemistry of the O-Nitrobenzyl Protecting Group in RNA Synthesis

Abstract
UV irradiation of 2′-O (o-nitrobenzyl)adenylyl(3′-5′)uridine in the presence of O2 yields the corresponding nitrobenzoyl derivative in addition to the expected A-U. A mechanism proposed for this oxidation involves the successive removal of the two benzylic protons with a hydroperoxide as the intermediate between the two steps.
