Model systems for photosynthesis - VI. Chlorophyll a sensitized reduction of methyl viologen in non-ionic micelles

Abstract
The chlorophyll a sensitized reduction of methyl viologen in non-ionic micelles has been investigated by continuous irradiation and flash photolysis techniques. Operation of a chlorophyll oxidative mechanism for the electron transfer in micellar media has been demonstrated. Yields of reduced methyl viologen and associated rate constants have been measured under various conditions. It is shown that the spatial separation of the redox pair from the sensitizer and the statistical distribution of the sensitizer amongst the micelles have considerable influence on the redox kinetics and hence on the overall efficiency of the system. The reduction in micelles is compared with the similar reduction in homogeneous ethanolic solutions.
