THE care of the dying patient demands particular understanding and skill on the part of the physician, and it remains an area where the practice of the art rather than the science of medicine is of paramount importance.The idea of legalizing the deliberate termination of an apparently futile existence at the request of the patient has frequently been canvassed, and the House of Lords recently rejected a voluntary-euthanasia bill introduced by a private member, Lord Raglan. But although the bill itself may have died a painless death, it aroused a great deal of public discussion before it did so. . . .
