Abstract
Comparative developmental studies using time-lapse photomicrography showed the characteristic conidial states of Monascus ruber van Tieghem and Backusia terricola Thirum., Whiteh., and Mathur to produce a previously undescribed type of meristem arthrospore. The two fungi are apparently conspecific, and B. terricola is placed in synonymy with M. ruber. No suitable generic name exists for the conidial state of M. ruber, and Basipetospora gen. nov. is erected to accommodate it.Keywords
