Abstract
This paper describes the theoretical shift that has taken place in speech-language pathology as a result of the focus on the pragmatic aspects of language. This shift is placed in the philosophical perspective of American pragmatism. Issues related to the study of language in context and areas investigated in the child language literature using a pragmatic theoretical framework are summarized. In conclusion, the contributions made by the addition of prgamatics to speech-language pathology are presented. In particular the notion of pragmatics as social competence and the centrality of context to the understanding of communication are underscored.
