Abstract
In this paper, the problem of the static behaviour of beams resting on soils modeled as Winkler medium is studied. In particular, some variational formulations of the problem are presented and, using the finite element method, a discrete model is obtained. Furthermore, its convergence to the continuous model is proven. The discrete problem is formulated as a linear complementarity problem or as a convex quadratic programming problem. Finally, some numerical results are furnished for different loading conditions, together with some comparisons between the unilateral and the bilateral theory. Keywords
