Abstract
The continuum theory of electrostatic probes is developed for axisymmetric probes of arbitrary shape under the restriction that their maximum diameter is much smaller than their length. The current‐voltage characteristic is not computed explicitly, but it is shown that the saturation currents drawn by this class of probes as well as the current drawn by them at the plasma potential are all proportional to each other. This proportionality constant, a function of the probe shape, is calculated for a cylindrical probe which has spheroidal ends. Keywords
