Abstract
The effects of certain drugs and placebos upon the behavior of hospitalized, chronic schizophrenic patients was studied. Every group showed improvement while on treatment. Improvement tended to dissipate with time and variables other than medication had an effect upon patient behavior. It is inferred that the changes which occurred in each patient group were due to the effects of suggestion, changed ward routine, receipt of medication, and other variables which accompanied the introduction of the experimental procedures. Incidental variables play a major part in modifying patient behavior when any medication is administered.
