Cefoperazone in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis

Abstract
Fifty hospital in-patients with acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis were treated with twice daily cefoperazone intramuscularly for ten days. Drug levels in the blood and sputum were measured on the first treatment day and bacteriological cultures were performed before and after the chemotherapy. After a 1 g cefoperazone injection the blood concentrations averaged approximately 50 mg/l and the sputum 0· mg/l. After 2 g, these values were 63 and 0·94 mg/l respectively, compared with the usual MIC-values for Haemophilus influenzae strains between 0·03 and 0·l25 mg/l. The clinical results, while satisfactory, were no better with the 2 g dosage than with 1 g twice daily. Except for ‘antabuse-like’ reactions following consumption of alcohol no unwanted drug effects were noted with the cefoperazone.
