Zinc-65 Uptake by Rumen Tissue

Abstract
Studies in vivo and in vitro were conducted to determine the uptake of zino by the rumen tissues of lamb. Absorption of 65Zn by the rumen tissue was estimated following oral and intravenous administrations. The maximum uptake of 65Zn by rumen tissue of orally administered and intravenously administered zinc was at 48 and 12 hours, respectively. The uptake of 65Zn per kilogram of rumen tissue was significantly greater (P < 0.01) than the uptake per kilogram of abomasal, duodenal or intestinal tissue. One experiment in vitro (replicated twice) was carried out to determine 65Zn uptake by rumen tissue. The mucosal surface of rumen tissue absorbed 71.2 ± 2.9% 65Zn from buffered nutrient solutions. The results indicated that rumen tissue zinc uptake might be a process of absorption other than the concentration gradient.Keywords
