Effect of solvent and temperature upon the emission spectra of aromatic amines

Abstract
The fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra of a number of aromatic amines have been recorded in polar and nonpolar media. Usually 10–3 M-solutions of aniline and substituted anilines at 77 K in nonpolar glasses, either did not show phosphorescence or else if they did, it was very weak and was red shifted with respect to that observed in polar glasses. In the case of p-toluidine, decreasing the concentration of the amine in iso-octane matrix lead to the appearance of the normal phosphorescence. These results are discussed in terms of hydrogen bonding between solute and solvent and hydrogen bonding which results in self-association of amines.
