Abstract
I am most grateful to Dr Blackburn for his examination of my pamphlet.1 My aim, however, was not (as he apparently supposes) to offer any ‘conclusive evidence’ about ‘the actual extent of the decline’, but merely (as the opening summary emphasizes) to make out a ‘case for a carefully planned inquiry on a large and systematic scale’. Nevertheless, for that very reason any preliminary discussion of the difficulties or fallacies likely to be involved is doubly welcome.
