Abstract
Adherent calcium phosphate coatings have been electrosynthesized on stainless steel substrates by cathodic reduction of an aqueous acidified solution of calcium nitrate and diammonium hydrogenphosphate. The as-deposited coating is of the calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate which ages in an alkaline buffer to yield adherent coatings of the more useful calcium hydroxyapatite. This simple one step synthesis can be adapted for the fabrication of conformal calcium phosphate coatings on metal endoprostheses and provides an inexpensive alternative to such conventional coating techniques as laser ablation and rf sputtering. Keywords
