Abstract
Three patients whose clinical condition warranted Na restriction and 1 control patient were given orally 15 g. 3 times daily of alginic acid, which has been shown to be a good cation adsorbing agent in vitro. In the 4 patients complete urinary and fecal analysis showed a significant increase of fecal Na and K excretion during alginic acid admn. when on daily Na intakes of 500 or 1500 mg. Alginic acid was well tolerated and had a mild laxative effect. Fecal Na and K excretion was increased by alginic acid to the extent of approx. 1/5-1/6 that of the cation exchange resins in clinical use. Keywords
