NORMAL FIELDS OF CONVERGENCE AND DIVERGENCE AT THE lO,OOO-FOOT LEVEL

Abstract
Making use of a simple equation, derived from Rossby's vorticity equation, expressing the divergence as a function of the rate of change of curvature along the path of an air parcel, fields of divergence are constructed on normal monthly pressure charts at 10,000 feet. These fields of divergence are then described and related to the known features of the general circulation and to areas of heating and cooling as determined through an independent method by Wexler. It is also shown how these normal divergence areas may be used to modify constant-vorticity trajectories used in practical forecasting.
