Filamentation of intense relativistic electron beams propagating in dense plasmas

Abstract
It is observed that relativistic electron beams propagating in magnetized dense plasmas (np≫nb) split into filaments at low values of magnetic field. The beam filamentation is inhibited at higher values of magnetic field, but is affected only slightly with increasing beam ``temperature''. The instability is accompanied by intense microwave emission, the power of which increases exponentially with magnetic field.Keywords
