Abstract
Recent research suggests that men are assuming the caregiver role for elderly women in increasing numbers. This quali- tative study explores the individual perceptions of husbands and sons in the role of caring for chronically-ill elderly women, based on in-depth interviews with six male caregivers. These men report on the strategy of maintaining outside interests in order to enable them to cope with their caregiving responsibilities. They all experienced changes in their personal relationships, yet received emotional grati- fication and satisfaction from the caregiver role. Recognition of their experiences as positive features of the caregiver role can be signifi- cant for practitioners in developing effective strategies to assist care- givers. Keywords
