A Comparison of Child-rearing Expectations of Parents in Japan and the United States

Abstract
Child-rearing expectations of parents in Japan and the United States for their nine and ten year old children were examined in this study. Parents rated 20 items related to discipline. An overall scale value for each item was determined based on the importance mothers and fathers in each country placed on each item. Parents in both countries agreed upon the importance of telling the truth, being open and honest with parents and obeying traffic and safety rules. American parents emphasized religion more than Japanese parents.
