Abstract
Evidence that the earlier concepts of the "pyramidal tract" and the "pyramidal syndrome" are inaccurate has been accumulating for the past several years (Bucy, 1957). Information is still lacking as to the function of the corticospinal fibers which arise from the precentral region (the fiber bundle commonly called the "pyramidal tract") and from the parietal lobe. Even more ignorance exists regarding the anatomy and function of the other descending motor pathways which lie outside of the medullary pyramids (which have at times been referred to as the extrapyramidal system). It has been difficult to obtain information on these points because the 2 systems are often intermingled and because the physiological patterns differ from animal to animal. There is only a limited amount of imperfect and incomplete evidence regarding the results of destruction of the corticospinal fibers descending from the precentral gyrus in man. It is difficult, probably impossible, to destroy
