Abstract
Measurement of the vol. of distr. of inulin was attempted in 13 anuric patients and 4 nephrectomized dogs. In patients the apparent "inulin space" at 8 hrs. averaged 24%, at 24 hrs. 30.2%, and at 96 hrs. 45.2%. One dog was given a dose similar to the patients (0.2 g./kg.). The serum level approximated and inulinoid blank value by 120 hrs., therefore, virtually all the inulin had disappeared from the serum. Three dogs received a dosage of 1 g./kg. Respective "inulin spaces" were 31% at 95 hrs., 40.5% at 133 hrs., and 50% at 150 hrs. This steady and continuous fall of serum inulin levels could not be explained by changing inulinoid blank, external losses, dilution or interfering substances. The data presented show that inulin does not equilibrate in any fixed volume of body fluid in anuric subjects. The magnitude of the progressive increase in the vol. of distr. of inulin indicates a disappearance of injd. inulin rather than a valid increase in "inulin space.".Keywords
