Abstract
Supportive therapy is a “shell” of specific techniques, based on explicit rationales, used within some theoretical framework that guides the therapist. Supportive therapy is not inherently related to the theoretical framework, which comes from one or another school of thought about development and symptom formation. Students of psychotherapy should be taught these techniques from the start and provided extensive supervision. Keywords
