Value of Chlortetracycline in Breeding Rations for Sows

Abstract
Nine experiments involving 409 sows were conducted on eight farms to evaluate the use of chlorotetracycline in sow breeding rations. Farrowing rate was significantly (P<.01) increased from 62 to 79% in four experiments by feeding 1 gm. of chlortetracycline per sow daily during the prebreeding and breeding periods. Farrowing rate was also increased (P=.05) from 74 to 86%, in five experiments by feeding 0.5 gm. of chlortetracycline per sow daily during the prebreeding and breeding periods. The safety and utility of the use of chlortetracycline are shown by sow farrowing performance. The sows which conceived in the treated groups farrowed normal litters, and mortality of pigs during and following farrowing was not affected by treatments.
