Abstract
The nerves supplying different regions of skin differ greatly in their composition, and this difference is related to the sensory capacities of the regions which they innervate. A comparison of the structure of certain of the sensory nerves with the relative number of pain and touch spots in the areas of skin innervated by them indicates that touch is mediated by the large myelinated fibers and pain by the fine myelinated and unmyelinated fibers.
