Abstract
Illusory changes, called “verbal transformations” (vt's), occur while listening to recordings of repeated wordsfPrevious research, employing children, young adults, and well-preserved aged subject's, has indicated a decline with increasing age in both the number of vt's and the extent of phonetic change between successive forms. In the present study, va hospital patients exhibiting signs of senile deterioration showed fewer vt's than well-preserved patients of the same age—as if they had aged more, but their high scores for phonemic changes appeared to show a regression to the level of 10-year-old children. Keywords
