Abstract
Fifty two sites were surveyed for otters in north-central Algeria and signs of the species were found at only 10 sites (19%). All the positive sites occurred within the catchment of the Oued Sebaou. Water pollution is widespread and severe in Algeria. Food supplies for otters were absent or limiting in many rivers due both to pollution and to seasonal desiccation. Riparian vegetation is sparse on many rivers and at 40% of sites there was no obvious shelter for otters. Within the region surveyed Lutra lutra is now endangered. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
