Injuries in Youth Football

Abstract
In brief: To assess the risk of injury in a youth football league we gathered data on 436 league players aged 9 to 14 who weighed from 65 to 130 lb. Information was obtained by telephone interview with families of the players and by a questionnaire completed by league personnel. Sixty-seven (15.4%) injuries were reported. Of the 67 only 37 (55.2%) were reported by league personnel. A severity index revealed that 63% of the injuries required less than seven days' restriction; no permanent disabilities resulted. Participants in the heavier weight division were injured more frequently than those in lighter weight divisions. The injury variables seemed to differ from those in higher levels of competition. Youth league personnel were frequently required to make the initial assessment of injuries.
