Abstract
Chemical components in leachates from five landfills in Japan were investigated for human effects by hazardous wastes. Among inorganic elements, concentrations of lead, arsenic, selenium, boron, and nickel exceeded the regulation levels defined by the Japanese law. Particularly, concentration of boron was very high. Many volatile organic compounds were detected in the leachates. The concentration of these compounds varied from sample to sample. Detection of 1,4‐dioxane and tris (2‐chloroethyl) phosphate in all samples is remarkable for human health.
