Abstract
The magnetic susceptibility of dilute mixtures of Mn in Se was measured up to 1100°C. These results indicate that the solubility of Mn in liquid Se is very small, rising to only 0.19 at.% at 895°C and 0.52 at.% at 965°C. In the temperature range 900-1100°C, where the Mn solubility is large enough to permit accurate measurements, the Mn susceptibility is found to be approximately that of a free spin. The effective magnetic moment appears to be reduced only slightly by interaction. The susceptibility of Mn was measured between room temperature and 950°C in the course of this work and is found to follow a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence. The effective Mn magnetic moment in Mn is approximately the same as a free spin.
