Abstract
A survey of the attitudes of 981 union leaders and members, representing 226 locals is presented in this article. Issues concerning perceptions of the extent and trends of usage among workers, company and union reactions to detected users and recommendations for future efforts to cope with this social problem are discussed. Unionists state that drug use in the workforce is a relatively serious problem and is likely to increase. However, unionists exhibit ethnocentric responses, stating that usage is less of a problem in their own workplace than in other work situations. Further, union leaders and members state that management efforts to deal with this problem in a humane manner are insufficient. Respondents stress the need for more preventative educational programs, in both the workplace and in the community, as the most promising method for amelioration of drug use in the industrial setting. Keywords
