REDOX REACTIONS OF HEMIPTEROUS SALIVA IN PLANT TISSUES

Abstract
Four distinct secretions and/or functions are associated with the “saliva” of the Homoptera and the Heteroptera: Pentatomorpha, namely the strongly reducing sheath material, the hydrolytic enzymes, a secretion that appears to be little other than water, and the oxidizing enzymes. Their biochemical nature is outlined and functions discussed. Instances of two possible physiological interactions between the saliva and the tissues of the host plant are described: − interference with the growth regulating processes of the plant, and moderation of potentially deterrent or toxic substances in the host. It is suggested that both may be due to redox reactions.RÉSUMÉ: RÉACTIONS REDOX DE LA SALIVE DES HÉMIPTÈRES DANS LES TISSUS DES VÉGÉTAUXQuatre sécrétions et/ou fonctions diverses sont associées à la “salive” des Homoptera et des Heteroptera: Pentatomorpha, à savoir: la matière fortement réductrice de la gaine, les enzymes hydrolitiques, une sécrétion qui ne semble guère être que de l'eau et les enzymes oxydants. On indique leur nature biochimique et on discute leurs fonctions. On décrit des exemples de deux interactions physiologiques possibles entre la salive et les tissus de la plante‐hôte: interférence avec les processus de régulation de la croissance de la plante et modération des substances de la plante‐hôte pouvant être dissuadantes ou toxiques. On émet l'hypothèse que ces interactions pourraient être dues à des réactions redox.Keywords
