Abstract
A novel optical compensator with a negative birefringence structure is proposed to widen the viewing angle of twisted-nematic liquid-crystal displays (TN-LCDs). We describes the design concept and the simulation results to give a theoretical basis for the development of this new class of material. Computer simulation of viewing-angle characteristics using the Jones matrix indicates (a) that the optical compensator can effectively minimize the amount of light leakage of the black on-state of TN-LCD, (b) that the compensator with a fixed director structure, which is the same as that of the on-state of TN-LCD, gave the best results, and (c) that the optical compensator is effective in several optical configurations.
