THE INFLUENCE OF DIET ON THE L. ACIDOPHILUS CONTENT AND H-ION CONCENTRATION OF THE INTESTINE

Abstract
In expts. on rats fed diets consisting of lean chopped beef, beef with added lactose, and "calf meal," no correlation between pH in the small intestine and its Ladobacillus acidophilus content was demonstrable; in the colon there was some degree of correlation, often not evident in individual instances but apparent when the interpretations were based on average figures. The nature of the diet used and the portions of the intestine examined are important in the determination of the average pH and numbers of L. a. found.
