Abstract
The approximate density functional used by Rickayzen and Augousti (1984, Molec. Phys., 52, 1355) in a study of the structure of the inhomogeneous hard sphere fluid is extended to a dipolar fluid. The density and polarization profiles of a fluid of hard spheres with dipoles at their centres confined to a slit in the presence of a weak electric field are obtained. A comparison is made with the results of computer simulation in a Monte Carlo canonical ensemble and with those of the previous density functional theory. The results of simulation are in much better agreement with the present theory than with the previous one. Keywords
