Abstract
The n-π absorption spectra of propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde were measured in various solvents and the effects of substituents and solvents on the n-π absorption spectra were investigated. For the former effect red shifts instead of blue shifts reported as the characteristic of n-π transitions were observed. The latter effect was studied using McRae’s equation. Hydrogen bonding between solute and solvent molecules is also considered. Keywords
