Abstract
Fusion technology will require superconducting fields of larger working volume and higher field strengths than heretofore Designed. The forces that will result are so large that novel approaches to magnet design must be developed. This paper describes two complementary approaches that may he combined to yield a satisfactory design for very high field toroidal magnets. The first provides a cylindrical load-bearing, element in compression combined with return conductors in pure tension. The second follows the design techniques that have been developed in the studies of force-free toroidal magnets. Keywords
