Abstract
Habitat use by red deer and hill sheep on an estate in the West Highlands was compared. Both sheep and hinds selected short Agrostis-Festuca swards most heavily. Sheep spent 50% of their time on these swards and remained predominantly at lower altitudes. Hinds spent 15% of their time on Agrostis-Festuca and occurred across a wide range of altitudes. Stags spent 95% of their time on less productive pastures and at itermediate altitudes. Comparisons with other studies suggest that the presence of sheep reduces the degree to which deer use the more strongly preferred swards.
