Abstract
The unsteady motion in a linearly stratified inviscid incompressible non‐diffusive fluid induced by a source or sink is studied, based on a linearized formulation. Both the two‐dimensional and the axisymmetric cases are investigated. The motions are found to be similar in the space coordinates and of an oscillatory nature in both space coordinates and time. Within the framework of the linearized formulation, the method may be applied to a general spacial distribution of sources and sinks each with an arbitrary time‐dependent strength. The solutions should find application to selective withdrawal from reservoirs. Keywords
