Abstract
The self-imaging phenomenon present in the Fresnel diffraction region of periodic objects is studied in the case of a single frequency sinusoidal complex object. Mathematical formulae describing the irradiance distributions of the Fresnel field are derived and numerically studied. The dependence of the axial localization of the best visibility planes on the object profile parameters and other properties of the diffraction field are discussed. The analysed self-imaging phenomenon and the cases of pure amplitude and pure phase objects are compared and discussed. Keywords
