Carcinogenicity of Epoxides, Lactones, and Peroxy Compounds. VI. Structure and Carcinogenic Activity23

Abstract
Twenty compounds were tested for carcinogenicity by skin application on ICR/Ha female Swiss mice. Of these compounds, the following were shown for the first time to be carcinogenic: 1,2-epoxyhexadecane, 1,2,5,6-diepoxyhexane, 1,2,7,8-diepoxyoctane, and 3,4-epoxy-6-methyl. cyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate. All these compounds induced squamous carcinomas of the skin. The last 3 compounds also caused keratoacanthomas. Epoxides of the aromatic hydrocarbons phenanthrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, and 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene were shown to be active initiating agents on mouse skin in two-stage induction of skin carcinomas. Structure adivity relationships are discussed.
