Abstract
A 3-yr study on the effects of 10–20% CO2 for short periods prior to CA storage has shown British Columbia-grown Golden Delicious apples (Malus sylvestris, Mill) to be quite sensitive to the treatment. Prestorage treatment of 10–14 days with CO2 was effective in reducing the overall softening of the fruit but the injury observed in the treated apples often exceeded levels acceptable on a commercial basis. Sensitivity to external or internal injury was related to maturity of the fruit.
