THE MYENTERIC REFLEX AS EXHIBITED BY THE EXTERIORIZED COLON OF THE DOG

Abstract
The motility of the colon graft elsewhere described was studied on unanesthetized trained dogs. The stimulus is applied to the mucosa. The principle of the "myenteric reflex" was confirmed, but requires a new definition, in which inhibition by mu-cosal stimulus does not enter. The "law of the intestine" may be thus restated: In the colon of the anesthetized dog, a stimulus applied to the mucosa is followed by contraction of the longitudinal muscle at and below the stimulus, and, 3-5 sec. later, by contraction of the circular muscle at and above it.
