The stereochemical course of the hydrolysis of cyclic AMP by beef heart cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase

Abstract
The hydrolysis of cyclic AMP by beef heart cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase occurs with retention of configuration at phosphorus, whereas it is known that adenosine-3′,5′(Sp) phosphorothioate is hydrolysed by the same enzyme with inversion of configuration at phosphorus; thus, the stereochemical course of an enzyme-catalysed reaction of a phosphorothioate analogue of a phosphate ester or nucleotide may not necessarily be the same as that of the natural substrate.
