A Study of the 21-cm Line in the Solar Neighbourhood

Abstract
A survey of 1200 profiles of 21-cm line emission at points equally spaced over the entire sky visible from Penticton, British Columbia, has been made. A selection of the line profiles at intermediate galactic latitudes has been used to determine several of the properties of the distribution of the nearby gas, and to derive the velocity ellipsoid describing the random gas motions. The vertex direction of the velocity ellipsoid is found to be closely aligned with the local magnetic field, supporting the view that the random motion is influenced by the field.
