Abstract
The art of reduction, Warfare and mecanisms of tribal differentiation in Jivaro culture. It is pointless to isolate Jivaro head-hunting from a set of practices which give it meaning, and to separate it from the social context in which it arises : the author attempts to define the Jivaro social totality, and brings focus on the problem of the articulations of its component social groups. She opposes two forms of violence, that of the intra-tribal vendetta and that of the inter-tribal headhunting and examines the means by which the Jivaro name, distinguish and contrast collective identities. It is mainly through language that very fine differentiation is operated, between local and tribal units.
