Abstract
Solid organ transplantation provides life-saving therapy for patients with end-stage organ disease. In 2010, a total of 28 664 transplants were performed in the United States, including 16 899 kidney transplants, 6291 liver transplants, 2333 heart transplants, and 1770 lung transplants.1 Although transplant outcomes have improved dramatically over time, substantial morbidity results from chronic immunosuppressive therapy administered to prevent graft rejection.
