Abstract
When voluntary hospitals were first established, some means had to be devised to cope with the relatives of patients who had previously provided all the care for the patient at home. Matrons were given the authority to control the access of visitors to patients which Hawker [Illegible word] 85) has described as 'gatekeeping'. To be able to function effectively as gatekeepers, nurses needed to operate within a system of organisational rules.
