Abstract
The cycloconverter provides a novel means for the speed control of a wound-rotor machine. When the wound-rotor machine is coupled to a large flywheel and the cycloconverter is used for control, the effects of cyclic loads on an ac power system can be compensated by ``pumping'' energy into and out of the flywheel. Keywords
