The effect of penicillin on the thiamine requirement of the rat

Abstract
Rats were fed diets supplemented with thiamine in doses graduated from 0.5-5.0 [mu]g/g with and without 50 mg/kg crystalline sodium penicillin G. With penicillin, growth at the 0.4 [mu]g level of thiamine intake equalled that at the 0.8 [mu]g thiamine level without penicillin. At higher levels of thiamine intake however, the improve-ment due to penicillin became less until on the diet containing 1.0 [mu]g thiamine/g no improvement resulted from penicillin addition. It is postulated that thiamine-deficient rats suffer from some condition that limits their ability to utilize efficiently their dietary thiamine.
